The Southeast Michigan Grants Coalition (SEMGC) is a subsidiary of the Detroit Regional Partnership (DRP), formed in response to the Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The EDA awarded the region a $52 million Build Back Better grant, funding six unique projects under the Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM) to help the region and country maintain its global automotive leadership. SEMGC serves as the GEM initiative’s central administrative body, supporting the work of its six core projects.

GEM’s vision is to accelerate economic growth by building on the region’s unrivaled mobility assets. It will create a smart, secure, sustainable, and inclusive advanced-mobility industry, starting with the transition to next-generation electric, autonomous, and fully connected vehicles. Simply put, it will support workers, startups, and companies as they adapt to the new high-tech advanced mobility industry as it rapidly evolves. In this newly created, grant-funded role, the Communications Manager reports directly to the Executive Vice President of the GEM initiative. The Communications Manager will also work closely with DRP’s marketing team to share GEM’s story of transformational growth and impact to the world. With your deep experience across a variety of communications platforms, and your ability to cultivate and grow an audience, you will excel in this dynamic, mission-driven communications role, and drive significant positive impact for the region we call home.
About the Role:
• Development and execution of an overarching communication strategy that coordinates with GEM Partners.
• Develop content for social media, websites, newsletters, special executive communications, and other relevant distribution channels.
• Development and management of GEM’s web presence.
• Identify media and press opportunities for GEM initiative, impact, and partners.
• Develop and produce high-quality, informative, and newsworthy press releases, press kits, and related materials.
• Ensure all messaging accurately reflects project strategies, priorities and operations.
• Develops content and directs creative execution to provide a consistent, targeted, and impactful message.
• Plan, create and oversee the design, content, and production of storytelling/education and outreach materials with adherence to project timelines and budgets.
• Maintains open channels of communication and solid partnerships with corecipients and subawardees to ensure ongoing alignment.
• Designs campaigns to target specific audiences, placing an emphasis and discipline on campaign performance to help with recommendations for future programs.
• Manage third-party external graphic designers, photographers, and other media-production specialists integral to the completion of meeting project deadlines.
• Contributes ideas and recommendations for alternative, innovative messaging techniques.
• Adjusts and communicates plan changes as necessary to ensure costs for materials, media, and labor are in line with budget.
• Stays informed of developments in the field of storytelling and communications to ensure the organization’s messaging matches current local, national, and international narratives.
• Develop regular media and engagement activity reports.
About You:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, strategic communications, or equivalent
• Minimum five years of communications, advertising, or marketing experience
• Strong, versatile copywriting skills
• Good organizational, planning, and coordination skills
• Ability to multi-task and re-prioritize as needed
• Excellent media relations skills
• Ability to take initiative to develop new strategies and outside-the-box ideas for social media
• Desire to take full ownership of assigned projects and can work independently
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Possesses a sense of urgency; is self-motivated and detail-minded
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative relationships
• Good verbal presentation, group dynamic, and facilitation skills
• Proactive approach in resolving problems and issues
• Demonstrated experience with all types of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and web content management systems experience
